Anna and the King - One of the Best Movies I've Seen

By: Ginny Mulan

I don't usually cry while watching a touching movie, but this particular movie almost made me cry and not just during the first time that I've seen it, but every time I watch this movie. It is an epic movie that tells the of story Anna Leonowens played by Jodie Foster, a widow english teacher who had come to Siam summoned by King Mongkut who rules the kingdom played by Chow Yun-Fat, to teach the royal children which consists of 58.

Although Siam is in Thailand, most of the scenes in the movies were shot in Malaysia. The movie was being narrated by the old Prince Chulalongkorn at how he remembers it. Prince Chulalongkorn who was still young during that time is the king's oldest son and the heir of the throne.

Anna is a strong-willed, intelligent, articulate (as the king said), and a brave woman who was the only one in the kingdom that dares to stand in front of the king. She despises slavery so much which during that time was very rampant. She was not scared to express her opinions and ideas and say what's on her mind eventhough it is against the king's rullership. But the king admires Anna for her personality and character. Anna and King Mongkut had soon developed feelings for each other.

Although the movie tells a love story, it does'nt focus on this for it also showed political aspects. And that's what I liked about this movie, it has a balance of romance and political aspects. For me, the movie was very realistic because it relied on the reality that eventhough Anna and King Mongkut loved each other, they cannot express and pursue it because of the rules and the traditions in the kingdom. Although it was a sad ending for Anna and King Mongkut's love story, it was a happy ending for the whole kingdom as they were able to stop the attempt of the traitors in the palace to take away the rullership from the king.

Although Anna was'nt able to realize the changes that she wanted to make in the kingdom, she greatly influenced Prince Chulalongkorn who took over the crown and abolished slavery. The movie ended in the scene where Anna had her last dance with the king before she and her son leave for England, while the young Prince Chulalongkorn was watching and the old Chulalongkorn was narrating who had said "Anna had shine such a light on Siam".

I also liked the theme song which I think was very suitable for the movie. The song is entitled "How Can I Not love You" sung by Joyce Enriquez. It was played after the end of the movie.
